Supermarket in 'lip service' scandal!

Well we're not that suprised. Supermarkets as we know, could have put a stop to this nonsense a long time ago, but they continue to drag out he death of the plastic bag for their own reasons.

This week I was contacted by someone in Bristol, upset about what Sainsburys claims it's doing and what we see in practice....

"I think Sainsburys are making statements that are not true.

The shop on the triangle, like other sainsburys, has cards and posters up saying that they will have removed plastic bags from the counter in an effor to reduce the amount they use. It also says on their website that

'From Wednesday 1 October we'll be removing free bags from our checkouts to encourage bag re-use. Customers who still require carrier bags will now need to ask for one.'

However, at busy times, this is not happening. Bags are still lying on the checkout counter for people to pick up and use freely. Additionally, customers are still being offered plastic bags, rather than having to ask for them.
I did mention to one of the counter staff that she should maybe remove the bags from the counter as the poster beside her till said so, but she just told me to talk to the manager.

This is the link to their website: http://www.j-sainsburys.co.uk/cr/index.asp?pageid=48&casestudy=1#story1

Sainsburys has sought good publicity from this initiative, and I feel that they are not being truthful as, in practice, they are not doing what they claim to be doing. "

If you would like to contact them about this:

If you see this happening and don't like it - don't shop at Sainsburys.

Yup

Here in Cali, although very liberal, we're progressive enough to solve a significant problem when it hits us in the face! Shouldn't be hard to fix, but paper bags have their own problems as do the reusable plastic bags so many stores now sell.

Plastic Bags....Enough Already

It's been clearly established of the environmental impacts of plastic bags. There is currently a trend in California for cities and/or counties to ban the use of plastic bags. Seems that it should be a simple solution to quit providing them to shoppers.

Plastic Bag Controversy: 4plastics411.com

Just like you… I too am concerned by the current environmental situation…enough so to leave an engineering position on the production side of things and jump fence to the recycling side. I intend to use my skillsets to make a difference…not my voice to create a panic.
I have been in the process of gaining data…for the purpose of building a recycling center in Michigan. One thing I know is this…I am not biased about who’s data I use…but your statement that plastics production accounts for 10% of the worlds oil consumption is blatantly incorrect…the numbers I’m seeing are in the 3-5% range…with improvements made over the last couple of years… and a trend towards making things right.
I will say that I agree with you fully..there is a very strong need to educate the public. But education is NOT defined as propaganda…it is a clear representation of both sides and ALL issues..so that educated decisions can be made based on the facts…not ropes hung in a medieval witch hunt.
I run a plastics website…and I have a section devoted to environmental concerns. This section exists for the sole purpose that I as a person who loves this planet have the same concerns regarding its misuse as you do.But the products I produce have been in your best interest…I’ve been breathing the fumes you fear for 23 years now…and I am as healthy as a horse.
Bags an issue…you betcha…marine aquatic issues…certainly…but that is why I’m here. Because I care, and want to make a difference. I am glad to help…I’m more than willing to listen. But remember…there are two sides. And they live and breathe the same air….

PBF plastics

About b..... time to!
Thank the Lord for someone with more than half a brain and he's right, there ARE 2 sides to every view about everything.
It's a cert that every person in the UK who's trying to be PBF has a plastic something they value.

Percentage

Some more data for you.

According to:
http://www.wasteonline.org.uk/resources/InformationSheets/Plastics.htm

we're more in the 7-8% range - 4% as a feedstock for plastic manufacture, and 3-4% during manufacture.

Hope that helps clarify the situation.

Oh and regarding 'education is NOT defined as propaganda' I couldn't agree with you more, unfortunately though, propaganda in the hands of the power brokers is seldom questioned. If you, like me, are concerned with the current environmental situation, I welcome your next post about some of the problems the plastics industry presents us.

Healthy as a horse? "it is reasonable to expect that your horse will live into his twenties, and many will reach their thirties" - good luck with that! ;-)
